The Small Baby Course was amazing!
The speakers were fantastic, leaders in the field, knowledgeable, and presented state of the art topics. I took lots of notes for new things to implement or work on. My only thought is that I wish everyone in my unit would attend. Before you lay a finger on a precious little person, you should listen to some of the speakers. My only criticism is, wait, there is none. Great, fantastic, must do. Thank you Synapse Team!

I have learned so much from how to organize the delivery room teammates, admission bed, admission carts. To divide and conquer with set roles is my big take away and I think by doing that, our NICU can make great strides.

I love that this is Nursing driven. It just feels very empowering. I have brought a few things back to the new Education Committee that I have formed in my unit so that groups can start to work on resources to help our nurses out. We are creating an ELBW binder to have information all in one place. It has also made me realize that the unit could benefit from an interdisciplinary Small Baby team to make sure we are keeping up to date on new advances and recommendations. I am working to get everyone together monthly to start looking at our metrics as a team.

The thing that has helped me the most is hearing from nurses at other hospitals. I was initially worried that I would only get perspectives from nurses in large 50+ bed units, but it’s so reassuring to hear from other nurses in smaller units who are also accustomed to having small babies on a less frequent basis. Sometimes I feel like, being in a small unit, we struggle to stay up to date on our competencies for small babies and it’s hard to learn and stay competent.

Ive also really appreciated all the streamlined processes introduced to us in our calls. It’s been so helpful in giving my unit’s team a starting point for coming up with approaches to change.
