Our Synapse Team is so excited to announce that Sarah Bakke will be joining our clinical consultant team!
Welcome to the team, Sarah! Check out her biography below!
My passion for nursing and commitment to nursing excellence started from an unlikely beginning. I started my career working as a software developer, having graduated with my Bachelors in Computer Science. During college, I participated in ROTC, and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Indiana Army National Guard. Several years later, I found myself at a small military base in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. I was deployed serving as a Logistics Officer, managing a supply warehouse. In my civilian career, I was committed to my job, but never felt a passion or drive like I did serving in the military. During my deployment, I happened to be placed in living quarters with officers from the medical unit. I became fascinated by their role in caring for the wounded, and especially for the local women and children who came to the base seeking medical care. I discovered my passion for nursing during those fourteen months in Afghanistan, and, through encouragement from my family and military colleagues, decided to leave my career in software and return to school to become a nurse.
I started my career in a level III NICU in Indiana, and have worked in both level III and IV NICUs over the course of my career. I am currently a staff nurse in the NICU at the Nemours Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, DE, and am working towards my MSN as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at Drexel University. I have led a number of neuroprotective initiatives during my time at Nemours including launching a language nutrition program, founding a multidisciplinary NeuroNICU committee, and organizing quality improvement projects. Additionally, I have an IRB application pending for a nationwide survey on the use of complementary therapies in neonates. I am passionate about all things NeuroNICU and am excited to work with Kathi and the Synapse Team to share my knowledge and passion with all of you!
