Hi everyone! I am here in Las Vegas this weekend to celebrate my husband’s birthday, and got to thinking about the overstimulation that is Las Vegas, and how it directly compares to what our fragile babies experience in the NICU. Vegas is filled with loud noises, bright and flashing lights, and many noxious smells. Infants in the NICU are exposed to the same stimuli, and are also exposed to many painful procedures and separation from their family. They are contained in an enclosed environment that frequently smells like a cleaning solution, have extremely bright light shone on them when they are trying to get sleep and are exposed to loud voices and other noises that can disturb them.
As NICU nurses, we are the protectors of these growing brains, and must do everything in our power to mitigate the negative input these infants receive from their surrounding environment.
As a nurse, we have the opportunity to heal the heart, mind, soul and body of our patients, their families and ourselves. They may forget your name, but they will never forget how you made them feel. – Maya Angelou
